Option to set data storage to external SD card in Android

I have a >1gb database file that is filling up my device storage. It would be very useful if i could store the database file on the external SD.

We take your requests seriously and had additional reviews with development and our security department to evaluate if we could make this change.  Development continues to be concerned about allowing a database to be written to a removable card.  Android is not consistent across handsets to allow the user to configure the SD card as internal storage. It introduces vulnerabilities that we do not wish to introduce to our customers.  Another area of concern is the risk of managing a large database and the potential scaling issues in order to accommodate such a request.

I'm not really happy with the reasoning given by Viewpoint for not implementing this. The security of data issue and whether the card could then be removed is an issue for the user, not the vendor. Neither of these is a genuine reason for the vendor not to give users the option to do it. Our larger projects are now struggling, where they are on older devices.

    Hi Betsie,

In reference to your comment below, will the status of the Suggestion be amended from "Will not implement"?

I will talk to the development team again on this issue to ensure the details are correctly represented.  Thank you for drawing it to my attention.

    Hi Betsie,

That is simply not true, SD cards can be encrypted and the device does not necessarily require the SD card to be marked as internal storage.

For example, the application (core) can stay on the internal storage and the databases (which are selectable) can be stored on the external sd card. There would be a config database on the internal storage that displays what projects are assigned to the device that reference the sd card held project databases.

That is disappointing to hear. This would have been beneficial for senior staff and health & safety auditors

    Hi All,

I definitely can appreciate that we need to identify additional ways to utilize the space on tablets as much as possible.  However, there are two factors that will not make this particular solution viable.  The first is that storing data on a SD card makes it less secure.  Second, only some Android devices allow you to configure the SD card as internal storage, but then the card cannot be removed.

We are having to replace all of our 16GB tablets with 32GB due to this issue. With over 300+ devices looking to be replaced you can see the cost benefit of having this issue (not feature) resolved.

I agree! Our Customer Service and Build teams should receive all projects for their region which can sometimes be 15 projects at any time. Our devices are not capable of holding this many so we need to keep deleting projects to add others on. This is frustrating for our users who need them all on to ensure they can cover, and for us to keep issuing new devices names!

This is would indeed help us.. quite a lot! We had the same problem with our tablets.. android uses a lot of the internal device memory. it would be great if we could also use the SD cards..

This would be very beneficial. 16GB Android devices only give you 8GB available as they fill the other 8GB up with useless Android stuff that you don't need but can't remove. I have 10 projects and now need 2 16GB tablets as I can't put them all on 1 tablet. Bought 64GB SD card thinking I could solve the problem but unfortunately not.
