Assign / un-assign causes via API

Would it be possible to enable causes to be assigned and unassigned via the API? This would allow an organisation to have a standard set they could apply without having to search through thousands of items for each cause individually.

As Causes are a system library, it means that there are nearly 2,000 of them (a lot of which don't appear to be causes at all) that have been added by various organisations. Similar to other system libraries some organisations have taken the lazy/selfish/infuriating approach of duplicating existing items and adding extra characters and reference numbers etc. This then makes the situation even worse for the other users of the system.
